The Gilman Scholarship assists students who are receiving or are eligible for Federal Pell Grant support. The Scholarship provides funding to study abroad anywhere world-wide. Applications are available twice a year: fall semester for study during spring/summer; spring semester for upcoming study during fall/spring.

The scholarship is intended to better prepare students to assume significant roles in an increasingly global economy and interdependent world. Although the program encourages students to choose non-traditional study abroad destinations, especially those outside of Western Europe, Australia, NZ or Canada, students may study abroad anywhere world-wide.

Scholarship recipients are also eligible to receive additional funding if their study abroad includes language study in one of the critical need languages as identified by the Gilman Scholarship and US Department of State (there are 50, including but not limited to: Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Swahili, Korean, Persian, Turkic and Indic languages).

Eligibility and Selection Criteria:

  • US citizens
  • First-year through seniors
  • Good academic standing
  • Federal Pell Grant recipients or eligibility
  • Plans to study abroad for a minimum of 4 weeks in programs that lead to Lafayette course credit
